Objectives
After completing this module, you will be able to:

Maintain performance by using Windows Vistaâ„¢ Performance tools.
•
Optimize reliability by using Windows Vista diagnostic tools.
•
Configure Microsoft® Windows® Update.
Introduction
In this module, you will learn how to use monitoring and configuration tools to obtain
information about Windows Vista performance, and how to troubleshoot performance
and reliability problems.
This module introduces the new diagnostic tools in Windows Vista that will help a
Windows Vista Technology Specialist pinpoint problems with memory, networking, and
startup failures. If possible, these tools will resolve the problem; if not, they will provide
easy-to-understand reports that will enable you to resolve the issue yourself.
You will also become familiar with Windows Update and how best to configure
automatic update options to help keep your computer secure and stable.

Lesson 1: Maintaining Performance by Using the
Windows Vista Performance Tools
Objectives
After completing this lesson, you will be able to maintain performance by using the
Windows Vista performance tools. This objective is supported by the following sub-
objectives:

Describe what performance and reliability problems are and why they occur.
•
Describe when to use the Reliability and Performance Monitor and describe the
relationship between the tools that it contains.
•
Describe the Resource Overview and Reliability Monitor tool.
•
Describe the Data Collector Sets and Performance Monitor tools.
•
Describe the Windows Vista performance maintenance process.
•
Apply guidelines for using the Reliability and Performance Monitor.
Introduction
A poorly performing computer can be highly detrimental in the workplace, affecting user
productivity and causing frustration. Windows Vista Technology Specialists need to be
able to determine the cause of poor performance and then use the appropriate tool to
solve the performance issue. This lesson describes various tools that you can use to
determine the source of performance and reliability issues and to take the appropriate
steps to improve system performance and reliability.

What Are Performance and Reliability Problems?
Introduction
Poor system performance and lack of reliability are two of the most common user
complaints that a Windows Vista Technology Specialist will receive. Computers become
slower over time for a variety of reasons: files become disorganized, unnecessary
software consumes resources, too many programs run at startup, or a virus infects a
computer. The type of software installed, problematic services, incompatible drivers, and
operating system failures can all affect reliability.
To assist in troubleshooting, a Windows Vista Technology Specialist must be able to
identify whether a problem being reported is related to performance or reliability.
Performance
Performance is a measure of how quickly a computer completes application and system
tasks. Performance problems occur because of a lack of available resources, including:
•
The access speed of the physical hard disks.
•
The amount of memory available to all running processes.
•
The fastest speed of the processor.
•
The maximum throughput of the network interfaces.
•
The amount of resources that the individual applications consume.
•
Faulty or misconfigured components consuming resources.
Reliability
Reliability is a measure of how often a system deviates from configured, expected
behavior. Reliability problems occur as the result of:
